Way before the Internet business owners would often hand out post cards. These postcards would be used in scrap books (advertising), would be used to write a note and then be mailed to a friend (advertising) or just to keep the business phone number handy for future purchases (advertising).

The Chamber of Commerce often mail out postcards and other materials to people who call into the Chamber asking for information to be sent by mail.
